In a bid to involve Muslims in the implementation of the clarion call of His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma; which is to inculcate and develop the culture of self-discipline if the country is to move forward, the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority has moved the campaign of “Operation WID” to the Mosques.
In his sermon to hundreds of Muslims at Jamieu Salam Foulah Town Mosque, one of the deputy Imams Alhaji Yazid Raschid urged Muslims to support operation WID and the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 which was launched with the aim of preventing over five million road traffic deaths globally by 2020. He emphasized that the country needs to implement measures towards improving road safety as some of these accidents are preventable.
Alhaji Yazid Raschid reiterated the sermon delivered by the Holy Prophet in the 'Uranah valley of Mount Arafat' (in Mecca). In which he said” O People regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. He said that the Qur'an insists on the harmony of man's spiritual and material interests’ guidance on how to achieve success "in this life and the next”. He further said that the Qur'an maintains its do’s and don'ts and does not aim at putting man through a period of earthly misery before he reaps heavenly salvation, but that they are rather the stimulant for earthly trials, with some earthly rewards and unlimited heavenly ones as well.
The deputy Imam Alhaji Yazid Raschid admonished all that the Qur’an in Suratu rad verse 9 says “Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it”. He encouraged all to spread the message of “Operation WID” which is interpreted as waste management through the Improvement of Road Safety and Decongestion geared towards eradicating the rampant health hazards posed by depositing of wastes within major streets in the city and rampant fatal accidents caused by congestion and abandoned vehicles
In her address the Executive Director of Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority, Dr. Sarah Finda Bendu highlighted the five pillars of road safety which are Road Safety Management, Infrastructure, Safe Vehicles, Road User Behavior, and Post Crash Care. She urged Muslims to join the campaign of road safety as people are killed on the world’s roads each year, leaving many people permanently disabled as a result of these preventable accidents and road accident is the leading cause of death of young people worldwide.
Dr. Sarian Bendu appealed to Muslims to inform their relatives to abide by the “Operation WID” as they will leave no stone unturned to implement the operation. She expressed thanks for the strong support of the Muslim Community and prayed that lawlessness will soon be a thing of the past in the country.
,p>In his remarks the Mufti Dr. Fadlu Deen emphasized that Islam provides absolutely effective solution to the lawlessness in the country as the religion stipulates measures on Islamic laws of equality and justice. He prayed that all would take up the challenge to end up the menace of lawlessness in the country and abide by the rules and regulations of the Holy Quran which has enforced good behavior thousands of years ago.
The Chief Imam of Jamieu Salam Alhaji Abdul Rahman Hamid in his remarks encouraged all to support the “Operation WID” and the Decade of Action for Road Safety which aims at preventing the too much road traffic deaths. He appealed to the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority for road bumps along third street as vehicles and motor bikes usually enter with high speed and prayed that all will come together to end lawlessness in the country.
